A thirst for sense

From the parched lands

I think we are all aware that the south east of England is facing a water
shortage. Some areas have had a hose pipe ban now for over 2 years, and these
bans look likely to be extended. The cause of this is an acute shortage of
water, and as such, conserving water does make sense.I want some advice as to
whether there could be a link with these shortages and the increasing number of
houses being built in the area, and am wondering how water supplies will last
with another 200000 odd house planned. Is this an example of joined up thinking
?

One pearl of wisdom on “A thirst for sense”

  1. Consultant K Says:

Joined up thinking. Sadly this is only something that exists in an ideal world. If you take your argument one stage further and consider the fact than the majority of new houses will be built on flood planes and/or areas that require coastal protection then you are left wondering what is going on.

In reality, there is no reason why we should not be able to build that number of houses and also provide water for them. All that has to happen is for the houses that are already there to be made water efficient and also for the pipework to be fixed (thames water looses nearly 40% or its fresh water)

Finally, with regards to hose pipe bans, it has to be said that they should stay in place. Why do we waste treated water on plants? It costs around £1 per m3 and therefore folk should design gardens around the climate in their area

Driving ambitions

From a budding motorist

I’m searching for a new car. I am well aware of the
problems associated with carbon emmisions and climate change and as such
want to be reasponsible. I’m hoping you may be able to provide me with some
common sense advice as to what to buy. I have been thinking about a small car
such as a Yaris or a Micra, which are fuel efficient. However, budget being a
consideration, I am looking at a trade off between efficiency and
price.

Can you help me ?

Cars are bad for your finances, your disposition and the environment. Perhaps you should get a pedal cycle?

In 2004, a Dutch court ruled that Wilkinson Sword and Gillette could both claim their razors were the best, as members of the public would probably not believe them anyway.

Looking to Buy

An enquiry from the web

My mother recently told me to get some common sense. Where can I buy it?

    Dear witless,

You have found the ideal place to buy common sense. Send the issue that you need common sense on to us, together with a healthy consulatncy fee, and we will provide the common sense you need.
Of course, you can’t buy it in the sense of training yourself, as it is not everyone who is blessed with the gift of common sense. Indeed, often those who think that they have it don’t.
However, we are here to help all those in need of common sense.

Freezing

An Suomi Tourist asks

recently while enjoying a holiday in the northern climbs one of the pleasures that I enjoyed was going from a Sauna (at about 40degC) out into a hole in the ice (at just above freezing). Common sense says that this is not good for you yet all the locals still do it. Am I going to die shortly?

2 lacklustre pieces of inspiration on “Freezing”

  1. Consultant G Says:

Common sense says that, with respect to matters pertaining to your health, always consult qualified medical practitioners. None of CSC team, while replete with qualifications, is medically qualified, and while a strong degree of common sense can help in many cases, it is no use here. That is the best advice I can offer to you.

  2. Consultant L Says:

Of course you are going to die soon. Everyone is. The earth is around 4.5 billion years old. Since ’soon’ is a relative term you are indeed going to die soon in a geological sense. If we look at other relatives senses we can see that you will also die soon in a mammalian sense (earliest mammals 120 millions years ago), a human species sense (between 3 million and 30 000 years old), in a British Isles sense (10 000 years as an island), and in a Scottish sense (Scots and Picts first united in 843 AD). In terms of normal human lifespan, how on earth would we know? Common Sense dictates that one cannot predict the future with any degree of accuracy. However it can give indications. For example, are you fat and unfit? If so you are likely to die soon if you continue to indulge in such activities due to heart problems.
