Unfunny, funny folk
A recent visitor the Edinburgh Fringe asks
I went to a show and the “comedian” was not funny in the slightest. Common Sense says I should just have walked out half way through to make better use of my time. Am I correct?

Another bunch of Bankers
A long named person asks
Is it common sense that the bank will only let me have my bank account under my first name. To most people I am known by another name (my 2nd name) and so they make cheques payable to that name and my bank is telling me that I cannot cash them. I have asked my bank to change my account name to match what folk know me by but they have refused. Surely this is not sensible

August 9th, 2006 at 5:51 pmCorrect, it is not sensible. You should be able to have your account under any of your names. In fact, the bank cannot stop you changing the name your account is under. Tell them they are wrong - it is often the only way to deal with banks.

Better reception
A driver asks
while driving through rural areas I often loose phone signal (and yes I am using a handsfree kit). I can clearly see mobile phone masts but these must be for other operators. Why can you not buy a tariff that allows you to roam between telephone companies? When I am outside of the UK my phone automatically roams between different networks. What is stopping it from being possible in the UK?

August 4th, 2006 at 9:28 amThere are settings on your phone that allow this - I suggest you use a bit of CS and read your mannual. Of course, it costs more to swap between networks, and there is a slight delay as the phone tries to track the best signal, so you may still lose the call.

August 4th, 2006 at 11:33 amdear G. I think that you will find that if you activate these features it will not automatically pick your home network and just go for the one with the strongest signal. Additionally if you are in mid call it cannot roam and so you still get dropped!

Yes, this is true, as I indicated in my original response.

August 4th, 2006 at 4:57 pmDear Driver,
We are the common sense consultancy, and not the telecommunication consultancy. It would be common sense to have a setting that maximised the use of all available networks (banks manage a similar thing through the Link network), but this is not yet available.

August 6th, 2006 at 7:52 pmIt is my understanding that the Virgin phone company used to do this - it piggy backed on different networks as it didn’t have its own. Not sure if this is the case now, or if Virgin still do mobiles, or if it was all just a strange dream, but I can’t really bothered to go and find out….

Message from the CSC Team
Since we transferred the site from Blogger to www.commonsenseconsultancy.co.uk we have experienced a sharp rise in visits which we welcome however some of these visitors are trying to use the site to promote things which have nothing to do with the questions by adding random comments. We have intentionally left the comments sections open for anyone to comment on, but have sadly now had to turn the moderator on, which means that comments from those outside the CSC will not appear until approved by the CSC
We want your comments, feedback and other messages and so please do continue to place comments and we will try to ensure they are approved (or rejected) as quickly as possible. After all though we are experts in commonsense we are not the only people with it.
Thank you for your patience, the alternative is to start a key word section

This is a common problem with alleged comedy in the edinburgh Fringe. Much of it is dross. However, it may be a false economy to leave early. If you have payed little for the ticket (e.g. got it half price) and have nothin else to go and do (i.e. if you are just having a day dossing about in Edinburgh) chances are that during the half hour you would have bought a pint (cost upwards of £3 in Edi at this time of year), that losing money.
Of course, this is a small loss, and can be fun, often more fun that sitting waiting on the one joke in the show.
Next time, why not go and see the really good production of Romeo and Juliet in the Botanical Gardens ? You can lie on your back on the grass and snooze or watch the show.
