Top RSPB tip

Thanks to our keen eyed bird watchers for the following

Provide your garden birds with a fresh supply of water every day to help them in the cold winter. You could even build a pond! Make sure though, if it is very cold to use tepid water and do not use any antifreeze products or other additives.

The question has to be asked though. Because they state that, has someone done it?

    Yikes - i hope not.

  2. Consultant K Says:

If you had a sign up telling the birds not to drink the water, it may actually help get rid of tics and flees but may also damage the feathers. Rather than using anti freeze or similar you could try wine or stronger drinking alcohols. These will have the same effect and lower the freezing point and will prob cause less immediate damage to the birds - though they may fly into a few more things

  3. Consultant G Says:

never, EVER add anything to bird baths (other than water obviously. Wine, whisky, vodka - no !
It is a good idea though to provide water for birds but make sure once you start you maintain the supply, especially in cold weather when natural sources may freeze over. Also remember to feed garden birds at this time of year. Full information can be found at:
