Well it is common practice for you to spend 1/12th your annual salary. This is meant to represent a down payment on the woman so that should the man decide to move on prior to the marriage she has something she can sell and live off for a bit.
Now, knowing who asked this question means that this is probably not the best advice as he is an unemployed waster. So in his case I would say 1/12th of what he could potentially be earning should he not be an unemployed waster!
While romantics would note that you cannot put a value on love, there are some common sense principles to consider:
How much can you spare ?
What are your fiance’s tastes ?
Is she the careless type who will drop it down a drain ?
and importantly
Do you need the money to buy yourself a new telescope ?
Common sense and love are not mutually compatible I am sorry to say. Head and heart often speak differently therefore whatever you feel is right will be (well probably more accurately whatever your partner things is right will be)
Common sense says plot a graph of cost and ‘appreciation’. The intersection of the lines will indicate how much to spend. No point in overdoing it now, is there.
I notice that google ads suggest a platinum ring. And what google ads suggest - you must do!
Provide common sense...

Consultant K describes “common practice”, but what is the common sense of this issue I wonder?
